Fy Môr-forwyn (My Mermaid)

£1,800.00

Stained Glass

One of the highlights for me in 2024 was to spend time thinking about William Morris in order to make a piece for the Glass Painters' Showcase exhibition 'Inspired by Morris' , sponsored by The Brisitsh Society of Master Glass Painters and Sanderson.

In the end I made four panels mainly because I was over-excited and entered three of them (the maximum! ) for the online exhibition to sit alongside an astounding 100+ others by over 80 glass artists....what a treat. They can be seen here

This piece was inspired by the only repeating pattern designed by William Morris in collaboration with Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones. Burne-Jones's mermaids were incorporated in Morris's scrolling foliage and flower-heads and although the fabric was never woven, the background pattern became the 'Wreath' wallpaper of 1876 and the mermaid figures were adapted by Burne-Jones for paintings in the 1880's. I was inspired by the original's sketch-like quality, beautiful beautiful muted palette and theme to make my own interpretation as a Welsh mermaid, or Môr-forwyn, from local Pembrokeshire coastal waters.

Exhibited in 2024/25 as part of the British Society of Master Glass Painters ‘Inspired by Morris’ Exhibition. PLEASE NOTE: This panel will be on exhibition until June 2025
