Linda Norris and I, working as the Creative Partnership, Studio Melyn, created a window celebrating the art and craft of the medieval glazier for the Royal Chapel above the Kingsgate entrance of Caernarfon Castle in North Wales. Today it, and the rest of King Edward I’s ring of late 13th century castles and town walls are designated as a World Heritage Site.
This work was a commissioned by CADW and is one of a scheme of thirteen contemporary artworks managed by design firm Hotrod that seek to interpret the story of the castle to the modern visitor with a focus on the work of the hands of the people who built, lived and worked within it; from masons to embroiders, chamberlains and carpenters.
The Glaziers’ window combines contemporary techniques with ancient imagery and texts to celebrate the materials, tools and work of this glorious artform which would have adorned this window opening at one point in time as evidenced by the original glazing grooves in the original stonework.
